5 Reasons Why PVB Laminated Glass Delamination and Solutions

Today we are talking about laminated glass delamination. Before today’s topic, let me introduce what laminated glass is briefly. Laminated glass is composed of two or more pieces of glass, with a layer or multi-layer plastic film, a composite product processed by high temperature and high pressure. The plastic film will provide the glass with better safety performance, as well as sound insulation performance, and impact resistance.

What is laminated glass delamination like?

The qualified laminated glass looks crystal clear without bubbles or dust inside the interlayer. However, sometimes we may notice some bubbles appear on the edge of the laminated glass, more and more over time. That is called laminated glass delamination.

The edge delamination of laminated glass will occur in a few months or years after installation. There are some finger patterns, stripe patterns, or other irregular patterns in the glass. Those patterns at the glass edges make the glass look bad.

5 Reasons for Laminated Glass Delamination

1. Thin PVB interlayer: Tempered glass surface isn’t as flat as annealed glass so tempered glass requires thicker interlayers to fill the uneven glass surface. Too thin interlayers will increase the risk of glass delamination

2. Expired PVB interlayer: Using expired PVB interlayers will also accelerate the delamination because of adhesive failure.

3. Impurities: The glass surface might be polluted by oil, detergent, or water remaining on the glass surface, which significantly decreases the adhesion.

4. High humidity: Water has a great influence on the production process of PVB laminated glass, so the entire production process should be kept at low humidity in the autoclave or laminated production room.

5. Incorrect temperature parameters: If the temperature is too low, the glass and the interlayer will not be fully bonded. If the temperature is too high, more PVB interlayers will overflow under high pressure. Thinner PVB interlayers at the glass edge cause delamination easily.

Solutions to Avoid Glass Delamination

1. Thoroughly clean the glass surface and keep it dry.

2. The laminating room must be equipped with an air conditioner and dehumidifier to keep the environment constant in temperature and humidity.

3. Strengthen the storage management of PVB interlayers, and do not use expired interlayers.

4. According to different thickness and types of glass, choose the best interlayer thickness.

5. Periodically inspect the autoclave to ensure humidity, temperature and pressure are within standards.
